Last summer, international volunteers organized the “Ruse Breathes” Marathon to raise awareness about climate change and air pollution. The event wasn’t just a race—it was a community-driven call for environmental action, focusing on the urgent need to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainability.

Participants began their run at the borders between Ruse and Romania, finishing at the iconic Freedom Square in the heart of the city. The route symbolized the connection between cultures and shared environmental responsibility. Along the way, participants engaged with locals, spreading the message of the importance of protecting our planet.

More than just a sporting event, the “Ruse Breathes” Marathon became a platform for unity and collaboration. Volunteers from various backgrounds came together to raise awareness about the global challenges of climate change and pollution. By using sports as a tool for change, the event demonstrated how physical activity can drive awareness and inspire collective action.
The marathon’s impact didn’t end at the finish line. The conversations it sparked continued long after the event, leaving participants with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the need to protect the environment. The success of the event has inspired ongoing discussions about green spaces, sustainable practices, and how Ruse can be a model for other cities in the region.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants, volunteers, and partners who made this event a success. Without your dedication and support, this initiative wouldn’t have been possible.

This marathon marks the beginning of a larger movement toward a sustainable future for Ruse and beyond. We are excited to continue working together locally and globally to create lasting change and inspire future generations to prioritize sustainability.
